European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
