Educating a Baby to Become an 'British Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Money?

Child education concept
The organization behind the advert explains that what looks like "extravagance or oddity" is truly "deliberate investment in early-stage instruction".

"Parents based in North London is looking for an exceptional and skilled educator to guide their youngest child on his early path to turning into an British gentleman."

When reading this listing, you might naturally overlook the phrase "initial stages" as just figurative language.

Yet, it could be the most important part of this unusual position posting, as it seeks to find a teacher for a 12-month-old.

Many of applications have already been submitted since the unidentified family advertised their request for the £180k-a-year tutor, who needs to be "someone very special".

During the past few weeks, the listing has gained attention in the news, with numerous questioning why?

Progressive Approach

The CEO, chief executive of an education consultancy, which is helping the family in their hunt, said that despite initial scepticism, he found the idea "far sighted", and "innovative".

When he met the family, he said they appreciated the unconventional aspect of their requirement, and how immature their son is.

But, they stated that they "didn't want to wait any longer" to get a tutor, as they had waited until their firstborn was five, and by that age "cultural bias had already set in".

What precisely did the family indicate by "cultural leaning"?

It's "all-encompassing", Adam answered. "The manner you eat, how you speak".

He said the older sibling had adopted "really subtle, non-verbal cues" from the family, and had taken on their cultural norms. The family explained to Adam they hoped to prevent this pattern to recur with their infant.

The intention: To hire a British tutor, who should speak with standard English accent, to influence the baby from the very start.

Tutoring discussion
The tutoring agency state the post has sparked a broader conversation about how parents regard schooling, privilege and the role of home and culture in education.

Natural Absorption

"A great deal of the education at the outset here is kind of osmotic," said the CEO.

It's through this subtle influence that the family are aiming the child will adopt the British traits they aim to instil.

Adam said the tutor had to be someone who studied at "the appropriate educational institutions – comparable categories of schools as the family hope to send their son to".

"The educator must be the suitable individual, they'll be performing things they may not realize they're doing, simply by nature," he said.

Cost Not Relevant

The family informed the expert the chosen tutor should preferably also have understanding of or interest in equestrian activities, winter sports, creative fields and music so as to influence the child in a broad spectrum of interests.

Furthermore though, he explained the family wanted the tutor to register the child on a variety of courses so the child would be "equestrian training and learning an tool by the time they are about three years old".

In the family's perspective, guiding their son grow into a "English gentleman" will result in success and open doors.

"Taking into account the advantages and disadvantages of that, because it's certainly a class statement," he adds.

But, despite all this tutelage in "Britishness", would the child pick up so-called cultural influence from the multicultural family he is raised by in any case?

"Absolutely", said Adam. "The family realize this could fail, but they've just taken the perspective of, 'we should try and we should start as early as we can', because the price of it is not a concern," he stated.

Idealistic and Unrealistic

A number of in the tutoring industry who share similar concerns.

Another CEO, chief executive of a tutoring service, who provides personal educators, wrote that "the process of embracing two identities, or actually, forming one's identity, is something that must be grown into, not engineered."

The expert wrote that he had relocated from Asia to the UK at the period of seven, and had been educated understanding and practicing two backgrounds. He progressed to be educated at Cambridge University.

Peter Cui was the pioneer hailing from the People's Republic of China to be elected to the role of Financial Officer of the university debating society.

"The idea that a single person can serve as a embodiment of UK identity, someone who can possibly transfer the characteristics of a English gentleman upon a infant child, seems to me naive and impractical," he commented.

"From my perspective, engaging a typically English tutor from babyhood will not necessarily produce the goal they want.

"I wasn't provided with such a figure, and yet I have been lucky enough to live several of the situations they desire for their son."

He added: "The fact is, personal identity can not be dictated from the external environment; it must be embraced, and it must originate internally."

Purchasing UK Culture

Naturally, Britishness is something Adam thinks can be instructed – and sold.

"I believe the situation that the world regards us in this respect is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
